30-633: Installation and Deployment for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 First Shot

Published by Phil at 2:20 pm under MSCRM 4.0, certification

To follow up on my last post, New CRM 4.0 Certification Exams Available Tomorrow …

I just took the 30-633: Installation and Deployment for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 (AKA MB2-633) exam. I studied the implementation guide for about five mintues and just walked right up and took it. I got a 54%, 16 points off of passing. Thanks to Second Shot, this served as a good practice exam. So, be advised, this exam takes more than five mintues of studying!

I noticed very few questions in common with the 3.0 installation exam. I’d say the exam focussed on features and gotchas new to 4.0.

So since I got 27 out of 50 questions correct, and I need 8 more to pass, I’d say picking up the Microsoft E-Learning materials and going through all of the practice questions should get me over 70% next time.

I’ll write again when I take my Second Shot.

Glad i’m not the only one who did that

I’ve worked through the courseware and not too sure how much more helpful this will be. Any ideas on practice questions any where ??

  2. Philon 07 May 2008 at 3:22 pm

    Welcome Luke!

Yeah, I think it’ll take a while before good practice questions start surfacing, but I haven’t really looked around for them yet.

As a cautionary note, the practice questions in the courseware look pretty terrible.
    For example:
“6. The Microsoft Dynamics CRM E-Mail Router must be installed on which
    physical server?
    ( ) Domain Controller
    (•) Exchange Server
( ) Microsoft Dynamics CRM Application
    ( ) SQL Server”

I mean, that’s just plain wrong. The course material states:
“• You can install the E-mail Router on a computer that is running
Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows
    Server 2008.
    • Alternatively, you can install the E-mail Router on a computer that is
running Exchange Server. However, this is not a requirement.”

Maybe I have an outdated version of the course materials and hopefully the questions have been fixed, but I wouldn’t trust the “Course 8911: Installation and Deployment In Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0″ that was published November 2007.

I’ll post back if I find any good practice questions.

I’m doing the Customization and configuration exam in a few hours. Hopefully it makes a little more sense. fingers crossed

  4. Philon 07 May 2008 at 3:56 pm

Good luck! Let me know how you do.

  5. lukeon 07 May 2008 at 7:29 pm

    no good

i actually found the questions and answers confusing me. I seem to spend a lot of time working out what the question was asking, and what the answers meant. In one question, answers c and d where identical.

Maybe i just wait for the upgrade exam since i have my crm 3 cert.

  6. Peteon 08 May 2008 at 1:19 am

I took the applications exam last week and got 54% as well. I found it a very strange exam, full of questions where there were two possible answers, both of which would work perfectly well, and yet the question only believed there was one correct answer. There were also the usual errors and inconsistencies, and issues such as sentences with words missing (imagine a question ending with something like “which of the following would” - would what?)

As far as the courseware is concerned I’m a CRM trainer and was actually involved in the development - and later corrections - of some of the CRM 1 and 3 courseware, and I’m staggered by just how bad some of the CRM 4 courseware is. Aside from the look and feel of the manuals, which I still feel is poor, they are littered with errors such as the review question you mentioned earlier about the router, plus labs which just do not work in their current state. Were the manuals proof-read at all? If so, by whom?

I’m hoping to have a go at the installation exam either tomorrow or early next week. Hopefully I’ll do better than I did on the apps exam…

  7. Philon 08 May 2008 at 9:24 am

    Welcome Pete!

I beta tested the courseware for the Installation and the Customization exams at Microsoft — they did a good job of incorporating our input, but it’s surprising how much old stuff went to press, especially with regards to the 3.0 exam practice questions being copied verbatim.

With regards to the installation exam, I found that there were a few typos, but nothing too egregious. Good luck!

  8. trondmdon 09 May 2008 at 8:39 am

Pete, i totally agree with you. I took the Application exam on Monday and got 56%. I didn’t feel very smart, so the next day a purchased a test exam from Pass-Guarenteed for CRM 3.0 Application exam. of the 100 questions included here, I got 95%.
Today I used my second shot, and thought it wouldn’t be possible to fail…… 56% again!! The test is ridiculous.
Compared to the 3.0 questions, which i though focused on the understanding of what Dynamics CRM could provide, the 4.0 exams was totally different and included irrelevant questions and focused on things that are no use to know by heart.

  9. Philon 09 May 2008 at 9:05 am

    @trondmd

That’s a bummer! Good to know that the 3.0 Applications prep materials don’t help with the 4.0 Applications exam. The same is definitely true of the installation exam.

  10. Peteon 10 May 2008 at 3:34 am

I’m starting to wonder if there is a problem with these exams as there was with the CRM 1.x exams, where they were almost impossible to pass. Back then I actually got involved with Microsoft on reworking the exams ready for the 1.2 releases, correcting all of the errors and making it so that it was actually possible to pass them (they also changed the passing score from a somewhat ridiculous 80% to a more typical 70%) I was surprised when I did so badly on the 4.0 applications exam, especially as I’ve been teaching CRM since 1.0, and although I admit I was rather cocky and went into the exam without doing any prep for it whatsoever I really don’t think I got 46% of the questions wrong.

I was hoping to try all three exams next week as I studied (and found a huge number of errors in) the installation course last week and am looking at the customization one at the moment, but now I’m having second thoughts.

  11. […] apparently I’m not the only one. In the comments section of Larry’s MSDN CRM Blog and at Phil’s CRM Blog, some test takers posted negative feedback regarding some exam […]

  12. matabanffon 14 May 2008 at 2:42 pm

I just did the CRM 4.0 application exams today. I must say I’m just a junior in the industry, but like you said Pete, the questions just made no sense. Most questions are hard to understand and are mostly contextual and subjective. Just like you I spent most of my time trying to understand the meaning of the questions.

Anyways, I ended up scoring a 50%. I’ve been studying the Microsoft training material for CRM 4.0 taken at the Partner Source website for the past week. Seriously, the training material isn’t even related to the exam, it seems like the people who wrote the exam never talked to the ones making the training literature. I honestly think they took the CRM 3.0 training PDF and just appended new stuff from the 4.0 to it. Even some of the answers in the practice material are wrong.

So, if anyone figures out a way to get decent training for CRM 4.0 please post the info.

    Thanks

  13. pfonsecaon 15 May 2008 at 3:41 am

    Hi guys,

I’m studying for mb2-632 : Applications in crm 4.0 exam, and I’m using the 8913 course pdfs, it has about 200 questions with answers, am I doing right, by using these materials?

Do you have any dumps for this exam?

    Thanks

  14. Peteon 15 May 2008 at 6:47 am

The good news is that the customization exam seems to be ok, as I just took and passed it. Some sneaky questions (I’m giving no hints!) but on the whole it was a solid enough exam.

Now I just need to have another go at the applications one, and then have a first stab at the installation one…

  15. Philon 15 May 2008 at 7:57 am

@pfonseca: I don’t want this blog to become an exam dump repository — tips and tricks are fine by me, but for dumps you’ll have to look elsewhere.

@Pete: That’s good news! I think I’ll move onto the customizaton exam before the applications exam, given your experience. Let me know if you’d like to guest author an entry on this blog after you’ve taken all three exams if you’d like to share your impressions.

  16. pfonsecaon 16 May 2008 at 7:11 am

    Hi Phil,

Thanks for the reply, what about my first question? Am I doing right, by using the course materials?

    Thanks

  17. Philon 16 May 2008 at 7:31 am

@pfonseca: I don’t know, but I’ll let you know after I take the test. I plan to use the same course materials for my exam prep, but I wouldn’t trust the practice questions. Microsoft claims that all exams are %100 based on the course materials, but I can’t confirm or deny that for this specific exam. I hear they were in a bit of a rush to get these exams out.

My recommended prep is to study the courseware, sign up for secondshot, and if you fail the first time, try to remember which questions you were unsure of and look them up in the courseware before you take the exam again.

  18. vnandoon 17 May 2008 at 12:15 pm

I’m taking the 30-633 exam last week of may, anyone knows of any practice test?
I’m using e-learning from Microsoft, but it seems kinda weak.
Of the three exams, which one do you think is the most dificult?

    Thanks,

    Fernando

  19. Philon 18 May 2008 at 10:05 pm

@vnando: I don’t know of any practice tests. Sounds like from I’ve been hearing that people are having the most trouble with the Applications Exam, but I’m not sure — I’ll let you know after I take them all.

  20. trondon 19 May 2008 at 4:58 am

vnando, i’ve failed the test and are now working throgh the e-learning. i don’t think it will help you very much, and i haven’t figured out anything that can help me with this exam.

    anyway, good luck!

  21. vnandoon 19 May 2008 at 8:53 am

trond, what was the exam like?

  22. trondon 19 May 2008 at 10:38 pm

nothing like i expected and not at all similar to the one for crm 3.0
the exam went into the smallest details, and i also believe it contains errors (i’m not the only one).
i still haven’t heard of anyone passing the test….

  23. […] the comments on my last post, I think I’ll move onto the Customization exam before attempting the Applications […]

  24. tuncson 22 May 2008 at 10:37 am

Just passed the MB2-631 Configuration and customization exam. Worked with the self-study materials for 2 days in detail and have some previous experience. Ended up with 84%. The exam was fine. Only part that was a little tricky was the Maintaining Organizations piece, focusing on AD domains and accounts etc.
631 felt good after failing the MB2-632 Applications exam (twice!). I don’t think I’ll attempt 632 until they change it. Its just ridicilous.
Will move onto 633 I think. Any suggestions on this? I only have the self-study materials to go on…

  25. Philon 22 May 2008 at 10:52 am

@tuncs: Congrats! I’m going to move onto MB2-631 myself, now that I’ve passed MB2-633. My main suggestion is that you over study the E-Learning courseware a bit. I’d say there about about 4-5 poorly-written questions that you can expect to get wrong just because they’re ambiguous.

I’d recommend first reading through the courseware one day, then take the test and expect to fail, but try to remember each question you weren’t sure of. Then spend four hours or so with the courseware and retake the exam asap. I passed just fine only using the courseware.

From everything I’ve heard, it sounds like the MB2-632 exam is really terrible! Scary stuff — I had enough trouble with the 3.0 applications exam.

  26. vnandoon 28 May 2008 at 5:20 am

Hi, I’m taking today the MB2-633 exam, and I have found this on the e-learnig that is really anoying!!

    On the course says:
    – - - - - - — - - - - - - — - - - - - - - — - - - -
    Software Requirements

Connector for Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services

The Connector for Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services has the following general requirements:
    • You must complete Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server Setup before you run Connector for Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services Setup.
    • You must run Connector for Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services Setup on a computer that has Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services installed.

    – - - - — - - - - — - - - - - - —–
But in QUESTION 8 of the Microsoft Dynamics Server Installations says:

What component must be installed before you install Microsfot Dynamics CRM Server ?

    Answer:

Data Connector for Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services.

    It’s totaly ridiculus!!!!!!

  27. vnandoon 28 May 2008 at 4:27 pm

I passed the exam today with 80%, e-learning is really weak, questions have pretty much nothing to do with the sample questions.

Experience and common sense is the most important I think.

  28. Ayeenon 28 May 2008 at 6:24 pm

I took the Customization exam a while ago and passed it. The exam is kinda tricky and experience really counts.

  29. tuncson 28 May 2008 at 6:35 pm

    Congrats vnando.
Based on your experience with this exam, would you say if studying the self-study materials was helpful at all? This is all I have to go with for now, and I’m not feeling warm and fuzzy right now :(

  30. vnandoon 29 May 2008 at 4:53 am

I would say yes, there are weak but necessary. I would suggest you to go through it and if you can practise with the VPC.

I uninstalled the installation and installed again on the VPC, browse through Active Directory and SQL.

    Good luck!

  31. Danon 30 May 2008 at 7:11 am

    Hi,

I wrote the CRM 4.0 applications exam yesterday and failed. I also believe there are errors in the exam. Some of the questions are also very subjective and are not related at all to the training material. The courseware is also substandard with loads of mistakes.

I have a second shot but not sure what I am going to do differently as I was confident of the answers I gave. :(

Has anyone heard of someone who has passed?

  32. tuncson 30 May 2008 at 4:04 pm

Hear Hear Dan. I haven’t heard anyone passing yet, and I personally won’t bother re-taking this exam until they modify it significantly. If working towards ceritification goals for your company, I’d suggest considering the 3.0 exam since it still counts towards the CRM Competency.

  33. harryon 04 Jun 2008 at 7:09 am

    hi vnando

congrats on passing the MB2-632.I too did the exam but no luck..i went thru the course ware but few questions i have still no clue of the correct answer.
    Could you answer this:-
1.If i were to create a invoice and send it to the customer and later i needed to make a price change in the product.what do i do
    a)change the invoice
b)delete the invoice recreate it and then send a new one to customer

  34. Rangroon 06 Jun 2008 at 8:26 am

Well I tanked the MB2-631 ‘Customization and Configuration’ , 50%! Okay, I thought I did way better than that.

    Cofiguring Your Deployment - 50%
Customizing Forms and Views - 33%
Customizing Entities and Attributes - 56%
Customizing Relationships and Mappings - 60%
    Maintaining Organizations - 25%
    Total Score of 50%

Yikes. My first cert test ever, good thing for Second Shot! All I’ve been doing for the last 6+ months is CRM 4.0! I know what some of the ones I got wrong were, but I spent a week studying the 8912 stuff and I’ve lived, ate and breathed CRM for the last 6 months. I definitely need to go slower and read the questions more carefully, but wow, I thought I’d get closer to passing! Guess I need some work!

  40. Bah CRM4.0on 20 Nov 2008 at 2:38 am

Good to see I am not the only one having troubles with these CRM 4.0 exams.

I did the Installation and deployment exam first, read for a weekend, got 56%.
Then I tried the Customizations exam. read for 1 week intensely, besides the fact that I work with this every day. got 56%

    Right….

So, second shot on Customizations. Read even more, got 64%…Closing in. There is two questions in the exam that is completely wrong. One is about updating icons to system entities (something that is impossible) and another thing was a created custom entity that held info about another custom entity named project. The question was about what right you had to have on the custom entity to delete a project that was owned by you.

If I own a project, and I have delete rights on the project that are user owned, then I can delete them. That is a permission on the project entity, not the custom entity that held info about projects as the question implies. However, if the question had mentioned anyting about Cascading restrict delete if refferential, then you had to have some additional rights, but that was never in the question. Its just completely bogus OR written in a way that makes me not understand what they are asking about at all.

Hope I can pass them soon. But its just like roulette. its luck and not skills

  41. Jazzyon 24 Nov 2008 at 4:23 am

wow so many woerd questions omg! almost upto 42+ scenerio based question in crm 4.0 application exam. I was shocked to see myself failed although everthing was going smothly but scenerios were totally time confusing. I scored only 60% mark and i am very dissapointed i just had 1:30 Hours for the papaer last 10 questions were just i marked in 10 minutes and they had made my result worst.

Just want to ask if its possible to upload Marketing List using the Data Migration Manager.

  44. Philon 17 Mar 2009 at 8:28 am

    Ayeen,

Short answer, yeah, it’s easy to import Marketing Lists through the Data Migration Manager or through CRM’s built-in import processes. But I think what you’re asking is how to add Marketing Lists that include their Marketing List Members (contacts), right?

My boss, Hoss Hostetler, recently replied to a similar question in the CRM forums:
    http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/crm/thread/772afe03-bbae-4b5a-a94c-ee396bbd1359

Scroll down to the bottom and you should have a very complete answer to this question.

  46. Philon 23 Mar 2009 at 8:21 am

    Ayeen,

I’m happy to answer the occasional question on CRM, but I’m a little too busy to become an answer service. I suggest you post your questions to the CRM forums.

    Thanks,

  47. Elmeron 31 Mar 2009 at 10:50 pm

Hi. Just want to ask if you’ve encountered the same error that I’m solving right now.

Scenario is I’m having problem creating a Service Activity. Error says that either “The
record was not found or you do not have sufficient security permissions to
view it.” The user I’m logged in with has System Administrator role.

Then I get the “General failure in scheduling engine” error with the “Ignore
and Save” button that actually saves the service activity.

  48. Philon 01 Apr 2009 at 6:39 am

Elmer, I haven’t seen that specific issue. I’d suggest going to the CRM user groups and asking there. Also, I’d check the CRM rollup fix descriptions to see if this issue is a known issue.

    -Phil

Do you guys have an instruction guide on how to create a stand along CRM IIS server? Our current setup contains both CRM and IIS in the same box.

Hey Elmer, I don’t understand your question.

  53. Elmeron 18 May 2009 at 12:56 am

I already got the instruction. Thanks for the reply Phil.

  54. Bobon 02 Jun 2009 at 9:44 am

Just failed the 632 a second time. I made the mistake of thinking that I could study by actually learning parts of the application that I didn’t have a complete understanding of (and parts that nobody uses *Cough* Sales Literature *Cough*) and attempting to understand it inside and out. I did worse the second time than the first. I am by no means a bad test taker. I’ve passed numerous Microsoft cert tests cold.

Microsoft has completely missed the point with this test. I use CRM everyday and have done 50+ CRM implementations (20+ CRM 4.0). It isn’t a test of how well you know the application, its a test to see if you bought the Microsoft Certified course prep material and memorized it word for word.

  55. Philon 02 Jun 2009 at 10:25 am

Sorry to hear about that Bob. Best of luck next time.
