MB2-633 Second Shot Passed! (Installation and Deployment for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0)

Published by Phil at 5:43 pm under MSCRM 4.0, certification

I put in about four hours of quality time with the courseware and got nine more questions right than last time for a score of 72%, which was cutting it a bit close for my comfort.

When I clicked “End Test,” I thought I was comfortably in the mid-80’s, so this leads me to believe that some of the questions are trickier than they seem. My advice would be to study the courseware a little harder than you think you need to pass.

Given the comments on my last post, I think I’ll move onto the Customization exam before attempting the Applications exam.

But first, I’m off to Italy for a wedding. See everyone in two weeks!

    Congratulation…
Do you now if there will be the “Extending” exam available for CRM 4.0?

  2. Peteon 23 May 2008 at 5:04 am

I’m going to have a crack at that one myself next week - I’ll let you know how I found it afterwards.

Still dreading my second attempt at the Applications exam though!

  3. Philon 23 May 2008 at 8:34 am

@tklenke: Thanks! I don’t know anything for certain about an Extending CRM 4.0 Exam past rumours. I’ll post if I find out more.

    @Pete: Good luck!

I’ve just this minute finished and passed this exam with 76%. I didn’t think it was too bad when I was in the test, but looking back at my scores a few sections stiffed me a bit (planning, email router, and the Outlook client) and some of the questions did seem frankly unfair as they were about topics which weren’t in the course materials - I can’t say more as a) there’s a non-disclosure agreement about the exams, and b) I’m a MCT and don’t want to get decertified! All I will say is do lots of background reading on these subjects, as although the courseware is sketchy in these areas there is a lot more you need to know!

All being well I’ll have my second go at the dreaded Applications exam next week. Hopefully my “second shot” code will work next time, as every time I’ve tried them so far they’ve not been accepted.

What do you recommend to study for these exams? This is my first time going for a CRM certification, and from what I’ve heard about the 4.0 exams, they’re tough! I’m not finding any “prep tests” or additional study material other than the manual on Microsoft Partner Source, and the “Test Your Knowledge” questions on E-learning. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

  6. Peteon 31 May 2008 at 4:30 am

@Crys - I’d recommend the training materials (as in the training course manuals) plus the Implementation Guide, alongside plenty of hands-on experience with the product itself.

Hi Phil. Well I took the plunge and had a second go at the MB2-632 exam having spent the last week studying it in depth. And guess what? I scored 64% - 10% more than last time, but still 6% off a passing score.

I’m absolutely flabbergasted that I failed this again. I’ve passed the other two exams for CRM 4 and have been teaching CRM since version 1.0, and I really have no idea why or how I’ve failed this. Looking at my scores I got 76% for the concepts, 66% for sales, 37% for marketing, 66% for service management, and 57% for service scheduling. Obviously marketing is the lowest-scoring area here but I really don’t understand how it is so low - after all, I understand fully the differences between campaigns and quick campaigns and know what you can and cannot do with each, and so I fail to see how I could have got 63% of the questions wrong in that section alone. All of the questions I had marked for review were in the first twenty or so questions in the whole exam, all of which were in the concepts and sales sections - nothing in marketing at all!

The questions I had this time were exactly the same as I had on my first go at the exam, and once again having looked at the course manual after finishing the test I can confirm that some of the questions are not covered in the course materials at all. There are also a hell of a lot of questions which ask you to choose “the best way” to do something, and yet there are two perfectly good answers available, but evidently MS think one of them is wrong. Some of the questions don’t even give you the entire story it seems - they give you a scenario and ask for the best action, and yet depending on other conditions or requirements you really cannot say which is the best option - for example, the decision as to whether you delete or disable a record relies a lot on whether you need to keep the record for reporting or auditing etc.

Not at all happy, especially as I put so much work into this and have no idea where I’ve gone wrong in the exam, and my company policy now says that if and when I retake the exam I have to pay for it myself now…

  8. Philon 11 Jun 2008 at 2:40 pm

Hi Pete. That really, really sucks. Know anyone at Microsoft we can complain to? I can start digging around…

Now that the Second Shot offer has expired, we’re doomed!

  9. Peteon 12 Jun 2008 at 12:02 am

Hi Phil. I’ve already sent a couple of emails off (one to mbs-cert, and one to Debbie Larson if you know her) and I’m awaiting responses from both. I really do believe that this exam is broken in some way, and I know feel totally disenchanted with the whole thing and have no plans whatsoever to take the exam again. Harrumph.

As for Second Shot, every time I gave our exam booking people a code to use for me it never worked!

  10. Crystalon 13 Jun 2008 at 8:21 am

I took the CRM Applications exam and had the same luck as most everyone else… Failure. I know I will need to retake this, but there is very little additional information available for preparing for this exam. I know the Microsoft website recommends taking this exam first before moving on to the other exams, but would you recommend moving on to the other exams first then coming back to the Applications exam? I feel like I’m not moving forward while only studying the applications section of the information. Help! :-) Thank you!

  11. Philon 13 Jun 2008 at 8:38 am

    Crystal,

I would definitely recommend moving on to the other exams first before coming back to the applications exam. I haven’t taken the applications exam, but from Pete’s experience, the other two exams are far more passible. They’re not easy, but at least they’re not impossible.

    Thanks for the comment!
    Phil

there are demo version of the exams at pass 4 sure. they give you 10 questions for free, and they are identical to questions on the exam. that will give you an idea of what questions to expect.

  13. Crystalon 23 Jun 2008 at 5:59 am

The Pass4Sure that was recently released does help tremendously. The questions do look identical to what I experienced on the applications exam, and I now have a practice score of 96%. I’m going to retest on applications tomorrow! Thank you all for your help!

  14. Philon 23 Jun 2008 at 7:07 am

Goodluck Crystal! Let us know how you do! I might brave the test if I hear of someone passing it…

  15. trondon 24 Jun 2008 at 5:12 am

Passed Application Exam with 100% after using Pass4Sure. Not the right way to do I think, but when they make that kind of exams…..

  16. Philon 24 Jun 2008 at 8:22 am

    Wow trond — 100%!? Congrats!

  17. Crystalon 02 Jul 2008 at 12:55 pm

I passed with 100% too on the second time around. Phil, definitely look at the Pass4Sure information…

Trond - have you attempted any of the other exams using the Pass4sure material?

  18. Crystalon 02 Jul 2008 at 12:58 pm

I know that the Pass4Sure DEMO alone gave me a better idea of Microsoft test logic… Some of the answers aren’t practical business practices…. When I saw what I was getting wrong on the 10 demo questions, I realized that the “Microsoft Logic” was completely off. It at least gives you an idea of what kind of answers they’re looking for.

Here’s to moving forward on the next two tests!

  19. Neilon 06 Aug 2008 at 2:29 am

Hi guys, Pass4Sure seems to have withdrawn ALL Microsoft exams from their site. Results still show up in their site search, but the result links are broken, and there are no Microsoft products in their catalogue. Maybe MBS-Cert got to them?

    Neil,

Here’s hoping. I’m tired of deleting comments asking for dumps. Question is: will I get more or fewer comments asking about dumps now that you can’t buy them?

  21. Numbnutzon 11 Aug 2008 at 8:45 am

    @Phil

Phil, you posted that for 633 you ’studied the implementation guide for about five mintues’ … The only guide I can seem to find is 108 pages of ‘Installing Guide’. Is this the same thing? Or am I on the wrong track?

I want to Take the 633 this week, and I have the printed training manual, but thought the implementation guide would be a good backup also.

Do you have a link to this?

    Regards …

  22. Philon 11 Aug 2008 at 8:52 am

    Mr Nutz,

Studying the implementation guide is a bad idea for best use of time for passing this exam… that’s why I failed the first time! (The new and improved implementation guide is here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1ceb5e01-de9f-48c0-8ce2-51633ebf4714&displaylang=en )

Instead, you want the eLearning Courseware, which is easily accessible if you have a CRM support contract through CustomerSource or PartnerSource (Menno has instructions: http://blogs.msdn.com/mscrmfreak/archive/2008/01/24/training-microsoft-dynamics-crm-4-0-courseware.aspx ). Is this what you mean by printed training material? This is really all you need, if you study it very thoroughly.

  23. MATTBIONDIon 11 Aug 2008 at 9:14 am

    Hello Phill,

I have just finished the test MB2-633 - Installation and Deployment in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0.

I studied through Microsoft Official Curriculum, Implementation Guide and hands-on experience. I think this exam is too hard, compared to what is shown in the reference materials. There where questions that I cand not find the answers in the MOC. I performed 66 out of 100 and and I saw some questions with more than one sentences correct. I guess this exam does not have good preparation materials, especially on the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Email router and Redeploying and Upgrading sections. We can’t find reference on some questions. I have three years of experience on Microsoft CRM and I have been working with this tool since 1.2 version, in 2005.

Do you know how can I improve my knowledge to achive success in this hard exam?

  24. Philon 11 Aug 2008 at 9:19 am

    MATTBIONDI,

66 is SO CLOSE. You only need two more correct answers to pass. Can you think of two questions you definitely didn’t know the answer to that you could go back and answer correctly with research?

Be sure to register for a second shot so that you can take it again for free, if you haven’t already.

But other than that, I have no advice. I passed using only the eLearning courseware, so I believe the answers are there, but it took me twice.

    Best of luck,
    Phil

  25. Numbnutzon 11 Aug 2008 at 9:32 am

    @Phil

Hi Phil, thanx for a quick answer.

Funnily enough, that is the exact same guide I found this afternoon. (Sent it to the printer before seeing how big it was) ….anyway, someone recommended reading that and the courseware, and said he passed pretty easy. ???

I did the instructor lead course (Work paid for it) for the 3. 631, 632 and 633. I was given a printed folder/training manual at that time. I’ve read these and I’ve been going over them again now that I need to do the exams.

So, do you think this installation guide is not required reading before the exam?

BTW Thanx for the link about 2nd Shot. I’ll be using that.

    regardfs …

  26. Philon 11 Aug 2008 at 9:37 am

In theory, the exam writers use the eLearning Courseware as the primary basis for the exam questions. The implementation guide is more real-world focused, and can help understand some of the concepts explained in the Courseware.

Microsoft calls the implementation guide a “supplemental learning resource.”

  27. MATTBIONDIon 14 Aug 2008 at 11:19 am

Well, I will have to pay another time, because Second Shot was not available. I have a major doubt: Isn’t Microsoft raising the bar on MSCRM certifications and at the same time earning some extra money in the process? What do you think? I bet that approximately 5 questions was not in the curriculum.

  28. Philon 14 Aug 2008 at 11:24 am

MATTBIONDI, it’s tough to speculate, but I think Microsoft is more interested in having folks certified in their products from a market share perspective than as a direct revenue stream.

  29. Bradon 12 Mar 2009 at 2:04 am

    Hi all,

I am battling to get through MB2-633 - Installation and Deployment MS CRM 4.0 as well.

I studied the courseware parrot fashion but still cannot pass the exam.
I have come to the conclusion that the courseware not are irrelevant to the exam.

I am trying to find some practice exams to work with. Can anyone help.

  30. Philon 12 Mar 2009 at 6:48 am

    Brad,

Sorry to hear you’re having a hard time. Looking at the Microsoft prep guide, I’m not seeing any practice exams that Microsoft recommends: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/exams/dynamics/633.mspx

That’s not to say there aren’t good practice exams out there, but I do know there are plenty of brain dumps out there that could get you into trouble that advertise themselves as practice tests. http://www.certguard.com has a tool that will help you determine if a practice test provider is legit or not.

    Best of luck,
    Phil
